If your High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) is damaged or lost, HSRP replacement is crucial to comply with government regulations and ensure your vehicle remains road-legal. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process of replacing or renewing your HSRP, as outlined by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Why Is Replacing an HSRP Important?

The HSRP ensures secure vehicle identification through tamper-proof features and centralized issuance control. A damaged or missing HSRP can compromise your vehicle’s legal standing and make it vulnerable to misuse or cloning.

How to Replace Damaged HSRP?

If your HSRP is damaged, whether it’s a minor break or a complete loss of functionality, the Ministry provides specific guidelines for HSRP damaged number plate replacement. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Assess the Damage:
    • For two-wheelers, if either the front or rear HSRP is damaged, you only need to replace the specific damaged plate.
    • For vehicles with a third registration plate/sticker, if only one HSRP (either front or rear) is damaged, replace the damaged plate along with the third registration sticker.
    • If both metal HSRPs are damaged, you will need to replace both plates and the third registration sticker.
  2. Inform the Authorities: Ensure that the updated information regarding the replacement is recorded in the Vahan database, which stores all vehicle registration information.
  3. Surrender  the Old Plate: When replacing your HSRP, the old plate must be surrendered and destroyed. This  process ensures that no old or damaged plates are misused. The destruction records are electronically stored and linked to the vehicle’s information, ensuring full traceability.

Replacing a Lost or Stolen HSRP

In case your HSRP is lost or stolen, follow these steps:

  • File an FIR: If your HSRP is lost or stolen, the first step is to file a First Information Report (FIR) at your local police station. This report ensures that the loss is officially recorded and minimizes the risk of misuse.
  • Submit the FIR: A copy of the FIR must be submitted to the authorized HSRP vendor or dealer to initiate the replacement process.
  • Get a Replacement: Once the FIR is filed and submitted, the HSRP can be reissued by the authorized vendor. Ensure that the vendor updates the information in the Vahan database.

Authorized Vendors and Dealers

According to government regulations, only authorized HSRP manufacturers or suppliers are allowed to replace or renew damaged or lost plates. Vehicle dealers or authorized HSRP manufacturers must ensure that the old plate is surrendered and shredded before issuing a new one. They are responsible for ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements during the replacement process.

Check if Shimnit is your authorized HSRP vendor for your vehicle brand.

Ensuring Proper Documentation and Record Keeping

For every HSRP replacement, proper records of the damaged or lost plates must be maintained by the authorized vendor or dealer. These records must be available to competent authorities upon request and stored electronically to ensure transparency.

Final Thoughts

Replacing or renewing your HSRP is essential for maintaining your vehicle’s compliance with government regulations. Whether you need a new plate due to damage or theft, following the proper procedures ensures that your vehicle remains legally registered and secure. Always rely on authorized vendors for your HSRP replacement to avoid any complications or misuse.
